Kenner Festa Italiana – Heritage Festival
Most visitors only know Kenner, Louisiana from the street signs near the Louis Armstrong International Airport, on their way in to New Orleans. Little do they know that it is one of the state’s richest areas of Italian heritage!
“The city of Kenner at one time was the center of the community for many Italian families,” said Nick Congemi, Retired Kenner Police Chief and Chair of Festa Italiana. The family-reunion-style day was inspired by the customs shared by many Kenner residents.
At the heart of the fest is food, of course, and Louisiana Italians know how to serve up a tasty blend of cultural influences from the Mediterranean to the Gulf of Mexico. Music keeps the heart beating, with Jerry Embree, the Chee-Weez, Robin Rapuzzi’s Glo Worms, the Molly Ringwalds, and the youngest daughter of Louis Prima himself, Lena Prima! There will also be bocce ball, plenty of fun for the kids, and lots of love for the rich culture of Italian-American history.
