Rougarou Festival

Rougarou Festival

The legend of a werewolf-like being that inhabits the swamps has been handed down for many generations – either directly from French settlers or from French-Canadian immigrants to Louisiana a long time ago. Dive into spooky season with this festival named for this mysterious creature: the Rougarou!

Rougarou is a family-friendly festival with spooky flair celebrating the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of SE Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural exhibits, children’s activities, and Cajun food, and then some. There’s a Howling Contest, the Krewe Ga Rou Parade, carnival rides, a scavenger hunt, a folklife village, pumpkin lighting, the Rou-ga-con, the pardoning of the nutria, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach, and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.

The Rougarou Fest was ranked as one of the “Top 10 Costume Parties in the United States” by USA Today in 2014 and “Festival of the Year” by the Louisiana Travel Association in 2023!
