Krewe of Zulu Parade 2024
“Zulu Parade Float at Gallier Hall” by Carol M. Highsmith in the Public Domain
New Orleans’ early morning kick-off to Mardi Gras proper, the Zulu Parade has been around since the early 1900s, lampooning the divisions in society apparent and not.
Famous for their coconut throw – one of the most coveted throws of Mardi Gras, Zulu is packed with tradition and a cast of characters including Big Shot, Witch Doctor, Ambassador, Mayor, Province Prince, Governor, and Mr. Big Stuff.
And one time, way back in 1949, their king was the one and only Louis Armstrong – the first celebrity king of any Mardi Gras group.
