Happy Coast Guard Day at Crooked River Lighthouse
Happy Coast Guard Day to the U.S. Coast Guard and especially to the Florida Panhandle’s local station, U.S. Coast Guard Station Panama City! Established on August 4, 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard keeps the nation’s waterways safe. Every year, this day is celebrated as the birthday of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The U.S. Coast Guard began to maintain the country’s maritime aids to navigation, including operating U.S. lighthouses in 1939 when U.S. Lighthouse Service joined the Coast Guard. The Crooked River Lighthouse was managed by the U.S. Coast Guard until 1995 when it was decommissioned. It is now managed and maintained by the Carrabelle Lighthouse Association as a private aid to navigation.
