Dobie Dichos in George West

The full handle of this literary happening reads: Dobie Dichos: Campfires, Chili con Carne, and the Words of J. Frank Dobie. We’d expect no less from an event honoring and spotlighting the tales of South Texas’ historical oracle.

Invited Texas writers and performers from around the state read from, discuss, debate, and expound upon the works of Live Oak County’s most famous son on the grounds of the Historic Oakville Jail, located off I-37 in George West, Texas. Prior to the program, a meal of chili con carne (the official dish of Texas), Pan de Campo (the official bread of Texas), dessert, and bottled water are served for those who purchase Program + Meal tickets. Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and live acoustic music is performed on the stage.

As author Ann Weisgarber said, “Where else can you bring a chair, sit under the stars, feast on barbeque, and celebrate a literary giant? … Only at Dobie Dichos.” It’s been cited by The New York Times as “one of the most interesting events to attend” in Texas.
