Societé de Saint Anne Procession 2023

Hedge Fund Manager Meets Mirror Lady, 21 February 2012 by Bart Everson is licensed under CC BY 2.0

According to mardigrasneworleans.org, “Founded in 1969, the Societé de Saint Anne parades every year on Fat Tuesday. The only requirement for membership is that you know about it.”

Ragtag, elegant, profound, comtemplative, wild, constant, marathon, transformative, ridiculous, sublime barely sum up the exhaustive range of emotions expressed in the all-day Societé de Saint Anne experience on Fat Tuesday. Known for elaborate handmade costumery, this neighborhood marching krewe began in the late 60s, inspired by the Creole marches of the old city, and took on new meaning during the AIDS crisis.

The launching point is in the Bywater each Mardi Gras morning (a good place to join the growing crowd is Mimi’s). They saunter through the Marigny and the French Quarter, adding marchers and the curious along the way. There is a solemn stop at the river for mourners to honor those who have past. Then the celebration of life continues as only a Mardi Gras celebration can.
