MS Nurdle Patrol

MS Nurdle Patrol

Get ready to nurrrdle! Head to Jones Park East Beach in Gulfport, MS every second Saturday of each month to help find and count nurdles. No sign up required. Just show up ready to nurdle!

The Bad News: Nurdles are small pellets that are the first step in the process of making any plastic product. Every nurdle is created to be melted down and turned into a product used by humans. Through leaks, spills, and other storage or transportation errors, nurdles end up in the environment, eventually making their way to the ocean. Nurdles are eaten by many organisms mistaking them for plankton or other food. Once in the ocean, nurdles don’t go away. Many pollutants are attracted to the surface of nurdles, causing higher rates of toxicity in the water around them.

The Good News: Plastic Free Gulf Coast hosts monthly Nurdle Patrols and reports data to the main Nurdle Patrol database at Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve in Port Aransas, Texas. Join the citizen data collection crew that is raising awareness about Nurdles and adding Mississippi beaches to the national and international databases.

So come be a part of the community that counts! If the forecast shows 50% chance of rain or higher, it will be cancelled.
