‘Descendant’ Free Outdoor Screening
Come out to the free Outdoor Screening of the Netflix documentary Descendant, followed by panel discussions and community crawfish boil.
The Margaret Brown film, Descendant documents the historic discovery of The Clotilda, the last known ship to arrive in the United States, illegally carrying enslaved Africans. The story follows Africatown community leaders descended from those enslaved people, as they try to figure out how to best honor their ancestors, share their story, and do right by their neighbors, many of whom have been grievously affected by the pollution from local factories. Some of these factories were owned by descendants of Timothy Meaher, the captain of The Clotilda. The evening promises a trip into history with modern consequences you’ll not soon forget.
After the 2pm screening, stay for the panel discussion with Africatown descendants, plus related sessions on environmental justice, genealogy, land reclamation, and historic resources. Then join the community for a fabulous crawfish boil!
