F riends, it’s that time of year again. You know, that time of the year in between Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day when there’s kind of a lull, and the days just to seem to crawl by?
Well, at least they did until 2006.
National Pancake Day
That’s because in 2006, the International House of Pancakes (now known simply as IHOP) introduced National Pancake Day. It’s a day when IHOPs give out free short stacks of pancakes and raise money to support local charities. Traditionally, IHOP serves around four million free pancakes and raises more than $3 million for charity on National Pancake Day. As a result, IHOP has raised over $30 million for various causes since the first National Pancake Day in 2006.
Not to be confused with Shrove Tuesday (also known as Fat Tuesday or Pancake Day – which always falls 47 days before Easter), there is no set date for IHOP’s yearly celebration of National Pancake Day. However, the day typically falls sometime in late February or early March. (IHOP usually announces the day a few weeks in advance on their website.)
Nevertheless, this year, IHOP has announced that National Pancake day will be on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Between 7am and 7pm, dine-in only customers can stop into participating IHOP restaurant and get one short stack of their famous buttermilk pancakes, free!
Plus, there’s a special bonus for members of the IBOP (International Bank of Pancakes) loyalty rewards program. On National Pancake Day, loyal IBOPers also get double the pancoins for any additional menu item ordered.
Of course, IHOP hopes that in exchange for the free pancakes, customers will give generously to the Children’s Miracle Network and other local charities.
