Iowa Mardi Gras Parade & Chicken Run

Iowa Mardi Gras Parade & Chicken Run

For over four decades the town of Iowa, Louisiana has kept the Mardi Gras party going since its humble beginnings as a simple front yard cookout.

Now, generations of neighbors still come together to celebrate with trucks and floats and ATVs forming a parade that makes its way (west on Hwy 90) around town, stopping at local businesses and homes collecting ingredients for gumbo. Sometimes the captain of the parade blows a whistle at participating homes for the crews to get down and dance to zydeco music. If the families approve the dancing skills, they donate ingredients to the gumbo, and a chicken is thrown into the air. Sometimes the captain will throw multiple chickens in the air for the local kids to catch.

It all wraps up at the Knights of Columbus Hall with a gumbo feast and a zydeco dance featuring Rusty Metoyer & the Zydeco Krush.
