Independence Sicilian Heritage Festival
Located a little further north of New Orleans’ North Shore, Independence, Louisiana is known as Little Italy. This is thanks to the migration of many Italians and Sicilians to the area and the subsequent establishment of a massive strawberry market around which the entire community and its many industries developed.
Each year, to commemorate the hard work and innovation of the ancestors, the town hosts the Independence Sicilian Heritage Festival. Like any good Southern festival, this one is loaded with tradition throughout the year, with the majority of the festival happening over a weekend in March, with a carnival, pageants, royalty, raffles, and a parade. What sets this one apart, is the distinct flavor: Italian Gravy! There aren’t too many other Louisiana festivals with a Spaghetti Cook-Off and a Meatball Toss. Saluti!
