2023 SunChase Solar Go-Kart Competition

In 2013, Dr. Joe Simmons, the first Backe Chair for Renewable Energy at FGCU had a vision. He envisioned a project to develop area high school student interest in engineering and renewable energy technologies. So he launched a solar go-kart competition held on the FGCU campus.
Sunchase at FGCU is an annual Solar Go Kart race, hosted by the Whitaker Center at Florida Gulf Coast University. CCPS NAF Engineering Academy students work diligently throughout the year to optimize their go karts and learn fundamental skills related to renewable energy, electrical wiring, and mechanics. This race is about balancing driver skills, energy efficiency and friction to be the first across the finish line and take home the trophy.
The SUNChase event is free and open to the public. Come cheer on the kids – and renewable energy!
