My fascination, respect, and appreciation for all things handmade began in my hometown, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As the capital city of Louisiana, Baton Rouge is the largest anchoring “Cajunland” and offers a fascinating melange of academic, cultural, and political influences. The Mississippi River borders the city as a muse throughout history for creative expression in all its forms—art, craft, food, literature and music.

To understand Louisiana art and craft is to appreciate its visceral expressions of place, history, heritage, and culture. As I travel the world telling stories of people making things with hand and heart, my passion for handicrafts leads full circle back to the city that planted the seeds for my work as a design journalist.

Wherever I go, my aim is the same as a DesignTourist— to keep craft alive by showcasing the talents, skills, and traditions of makers, so let’s explore the creative soul of Baton Rouge by meeting its thriving community of artists and craftspeople.

A visit to The Baton Rouge Arts Market held on the first Saturday of each month puts you in the creative heart of this city. The outdoor market in downtown Baton Rouge takes place from 8 am to noon at 5th and Main streets and alongside the Red Stick Farmers Market.

PINELLAS PARK – The University of South Florida Athletics Department recently provided hands-on opportunities for its student-athletes to give back to the community. The partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco Counties brought coaches, players, and alumni from the university’s football and basketball programs to volunteer on build sites in Pinellas Park.

On Friday, Sept. 24, the USF Men’s Basketball team and coaching staff were on-site volunteering alongside Cynthia Thompson, a future Habitat homeowner. Thompson is a single mom to her 10-year-old daughter, Abbey, who is a cancer survivor.

Earlier this week, the USF Football team decided to jump in. Volunteers from the team were on multiple sites in Tellor Estates. Soon to be home to 75 families, Tellor Estates is the affiliate’s largest development to date. USF student-athletes completed projects such as landscaping, painting, and installing hurricane shutters.

Stuckey’s reemergence on I-10 along the Gulf Coast mirrors what’s happening with the brand across the country. We’re excited to have Stephanie Stuckey and the Stuckey’s Pecan Blog Roll as one of our first content collaborators.
“Relax, Refresh, Refuel,” the billboards read. The slanted red-and-yellow script font signaled an oasis for cramped legs, restless children, and hungry drivers. It signaled clean bathrooms, a place to fuel up, and a treasure trove of delicious candy (do the words “Pecan Log Roll” ring any bells?) and even nuttier souvenirs.

Stephanie Stuckey’s grandfather founded Stuckey’s in 1937 from a shack, slinging pecans, and he built it into a shiny chain of 300+ stores. After the company was tossed and tarnished by multiple sets of hands, Stephanie seized the opportunity to buy it back. In what could absolutely be called the coolest comeback story the South’s seen in decades, this lawyer-turned-CEO is reviving the nostalgia, comfort, and wonder of the great American road trip one Pecan Log Roll at a time.

TAMPA BAY – Green Book of Tampa Bay (GBTB) is an online resource that offers its readers information on Black-owned businesses, entrepreneurs and cultural experiences.

Recently, GBTB has expanded its goal of “Helping you put your green into Black” by enabling more businesses to promote themselves through their own website – for free.

Through a $25,000 grant from the Pinellas Community Foundation’s Venture Philanthropy Fund (VPF), GBTB is on track to have completed 30 free websites for Black-owned businesses by the end of the year.

Ocean currents sometimes pinch off sections that create circular currents of water called “eddies.” This “whirlpool” motion moves nutrients to the water’s surface, playing a significant role in the health of the Florida Keys coral reef ecosystem.

Using a numerical model that simulates ocean currents, researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and collaborators from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute in Germany and the Institut Universitaire Europeen De La Mer/Laboratoire d’Océonographie Physique et Spatiale in France are shedding light on this important “motion of the ocean.” They have conducted a first-of-its-kind study identifying the mechanisms behind the formation of sub-mesoscale eddies in the Straits of Florida, which have important environmental implications.

Despite the swift flow of the Florida Current, which flows in the Straits of Florida and connects the Loop Current in the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf Stream in the Western Atlantic Ocean, eddies provide a mechanism for the retention of marine organisms such as fish and coral larvae. Since they trap the nutrient rich West Florida Shelf waters, they provide habitat to many reef and pelagic species within the region of the Florida Keys Reef Track, which sustains the very high productivity of this region.
