Lights Out for Birds!

Lights Out for Birds!

Birds are vitally important to the environment and benefit us in so many ways. Approximately 1 of every 3 birds migrating through the U.S. in spring, navigate with the night sky in one of the planet’s great wildlife spectacles. However, as they pass over big cities on their way, they can become disoriented by bright artificial lights and skyglow, often causing them to collide with buildings or windows or throwing them off their migration paths.

Turning off or sheilding lights can help and is also good for people. Artificial Lights At Night (ALAN) can negatively impact health – from sleep deprivation to depression to heart disease in humans. By turning off lights, we protect birds, ourselves, save money, and reduce carbon pollution. It’s a win-win.

Lights Out, Texas! is a campaign of education, awareness, and action that focuses on protecting the billions of migratory birds traveling through Texas. While the link below provides information from Texas Audubon, much of the info applies to the entire Gulf Coast. Learn more and sign up for bird migration alerts.
