Each month, the Galveston, Texas Rosenberg Library Museum displays great finds and acquistions from the archives. The latest Treasure of the Month is a pair of cigarette cards featuring portraits of Jack Johnson – Galveston native and first Black world heavyweight boxing champion. It’s just in time to honor Juneteenth in Galveston – the birthplace of the holiday. Look for related Juneteenth events and posts as we get closer to the official day, June 19. – Editor

World Heavyweight Champ, Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson, nicknamed “The Galveston Giant,” was born in Galveston in 1878. He first learned to box in his travels as a young man. In 1898, Johnson returned to Galveston and made his professional debut. In 1908, Johnson won the titles of World Heavyweight Champion. He held the title until 1915. Johnson faced racist press throughout his career. After one fight, race riots broke out in more than 25 states and 50 cities, killing at least 20 people and injuring hundreds more.

Why Cigarette Cards?

From the 1870s to the 1940s, cigarette companies often included cardboard trading cards in their products to stiffen the packaging and advertise their brand. The cards covered a variety of subjects, such as popular actresses and models, athletes, military figures, animals, and much more. Collecting these cards became a popular hobby.

The cards in the Rosenberg collection date from 1910 and are part of the “Champion Athlete & Prize Fighter Series,” issued by two American companies, Hassan Cigarettes and Mecca Cigarettes. Both cards in the collection have a full-color illustration of Jack Johnson on the front, and a short biography with information about his most important matches through 1909.

The Library purchased these cards at auction as part of ongoing efforts to preserve and display diverse stories within Galveston’s history. The fact that the island has kickstarted so many stories of incredible success, including Jack Johnson’s undefeated talent, reflects the true meaning and influence of Juneteenth in Galveston’s culture – having the opportunity to excel and be the best human you can be.

Learn about Charles Dickens’ life and legacy from his descendants.

Five of Charles Dickens’ great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren will celebrate the season with Galveston revelers at Rosenberg Library, It all happens just before the kick-of of the island’s annual Dickens on the Strand weekend. This is the 50th year of the Victorian holiday festival.

Enjoy a panel discussion with Polly Boyd, Mark Dickens, and Deborah Dickens. Hear about their role in keeping Dickens’ stories alive. After the discussion, the library’s Galveston & Texas History Center will provide a short talk and viewing of the first edition copies of Charles Dickens’ works in their collection. There will also be a Dickens-themed Treasure of the Month on the 2nd floor of the library.

Later that afternoon, children, kindergarten age and up may enjoy a practically perfect teatime with members of the Dickens family. Dress up – costumes encouraged, but not required.

These events are an early celebration before Dickens on the Strand officially starts a few blocks down later that evening.

We at Go! Gulf States choose to cover NASA in this decade and do the other things not just because they are cool, but because so much of what they do happens in Gulf states. Because that goal will show how much work toward our race for space occurs right here along the Gulf Coast. And because that challenge is one that we’re willing to accept. – Editor

Four astronauts are busy training for Artemis II, the first mission to carry humans on NASA’s powerful SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft. They’ve been testing systems to support life in deep space on future Moon missions and expanding the space frontier beyond Earth orbit.

In August, the crew – NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen – finished the first part of their training known as fundamentals, establishing a foundational knowledge of all SLS and Orion systems.

Home Sweet Space

The quartet began the process of learning every inch of their Orion crew module’s interior, which will serve as their home for the approximately 10-day flight test. They reviewed the building blocks for navigating the spacecraft’s displays and executing the procedures they will use to fly and monitor Orion. While some training activities included all four crew members together, other activities involved one-on-one sessions with trainers.

“The crew is making incredible progress. They’re getting ready for their flight as the first people to fly inside NASA’s newest spacecraft built for deep space,” said Jacki Mahaffey, chief training officer for Artemis II, based at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “Their training is preparing them to do everything from planned mission tasks and daily operations, to how to recognize and deal with unexpected situations.”

Folks considering a late-summer/early fall visit to Galveston should put the Galveston Railroad Museum on the itinerary. The indoor-outdoor attraction is half housed in the magnificent old 1932 Depot, and the other half covers five acres of rolling train stock, including locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and cabooses. The site is said to be haunted, so boo sure to keep it on the list for potential Spooky Season plans. – Editor

During this segment of Experience Galveston, Christine chats with local artists Elizabeth Punches and Catherine Stroud about completing the newly restored mural at the Galveston Railroad Museum.

Punches and Stroud finished restoring the mural last year, just in time for the museum’s Railfest, which happens each spring.

Artist Jan Spencer originally painted the mural in October 1989. The newly restored mural took about four days to paint and several months to plan. The mural is part of ongoing efforts to refresh the Galveston Railroad Museum.

Head to the Galveston Naval Museum, home of the World War II fighting vessels USS Stewart and USS Cavalla, this Memorial Weekend. The holiday features a ceremony on Memorial Day proper and a raffle to stoke funds for the restoration of the USS Stewart. Nearby, the Battleship Texas is in drydock and open for tours on Sundays. But the part of the festivities closest to our hearts is the newly christened permanent exhibit dedicated to the Women of World War II which was launched in March, this year. – Editor

The Women of World War II exhibit debuted at the Galveston Naval Museum in March in honor of International Women’s Month. The exhibit is a moving and inspirational tribute that examines the history of World War II through the eyes of the fearless women who broke through societal barriers and in turn, wielded an enormous contribution to Allied victory. “My grandmother was a Rosie, and both of my grandfathers served overseas during World War II, so the museum and particularly this aspect of history have always resonated with me,” says Kimber Fountain, board member and curator of the exhibit.

Featured stories and photographs span the globe and highlight nearly every capacity in which women served, both civilian and military, from “The Rosies” who worked in munitions and industrial factories across the United States to the women who served as covert agents, war correspondents, and informants in war-torn Europe.

It’s the hottest ticket in Houston, in Texas… maybe even the planet this weekend. It’s Final Four time for college basketball, and all eyes are on the largest city on the Gulf Coast.

Basketball fever is no stranger to Houston. The Bayou City hosted the Final Four in 2016, when Villanova reigned supreme. And in 2011, current 2023 contender UConn also made it to the four, back when NRG was known as Reliant Stadium. The games themselves are the main draw, of course, but Houston often out-glitters its headliners. Be sure to explore what else this glorious city has in store.

This year, the March Madness Music Festival goes all out, featuring big buzz talents Lil NasX, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, and Omar Apollo. But wait, that’s not all! The Friday night headliner is Houston’s very own hometown homegrrl, Megan Thee Stallion. And it all takes place in Discovery Green, a beautiful 12-acre park in the very heart of downtown.

Owls & Aztecs, Huskies & Hurricanes! The stages are set, the brackets are bracketed! They say that March is supposed to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb, but this Friday, Houston kicks off a jam-packed weekend that includes live music, tailgating, and more to keep the city roaring all the way until April 3, when the winners face off for the title downtown at NRG Stadium!

But this weekend, Houston also boasts the Astros playing against the Chicago White Sox at Minute Maid Park, and the Rockets facing off against the Detroit Pistons at the Toyota Center – all downtown. Whew!

GGS collaborator and friend Christine Ruiz Hopkins is about as multi-hyphenate as a Galveston writer can get. Hustle, for her, has always been “on-brand.” What you might not know about her is that in addition to covering the culture and events of the area for so many different local media outlets and prominent hospitality groups, is that she’s not only a wine buff, but also a concierge of the grape. Read and click through to learn more about how she came to juggle words and wine! – Editor

Have you ever had those days when your daily tasks became mundane? For me, it was responding to hundreds of guest reviews for three hotels, a spa, and a restaurant and creating content for seven different Facebook pages and three Instagram accounts. After years of doing the same projects every week, it was time for a positive outlet or distraction, so I jumped into a side gig.

When you work a side hustle, through direct selling, social selling, and multi-level marketing or whatever you want to call it, these companies provide many resources, training, and SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) goals. The great thing is that you can implement these skills into your day job.

My marketing communications job gave me a lot of speaking skills and presentation skills. But I’m innately shy, so empowering me to set and reach my business goals has allowed me to grow further. And, of course, when it’s your business and you’re in control, it’s entirely different.

The ship channel between Galveston and the Bolivar Peninsula definitely had some chop to it that day. A week’s worth of storms had soaked the region and brought with them a stiff chill. Fortunately, the churning waves didn’t affect the ride over on the ferry. The free, 24/7 service bridges Texas State Highway 87, the most direct route to Crystal Beach from the island. The 18-minute trip was as smooth as a dolphin.

The November 21, 2022 grand opening and ribbon-cutting party for the newly branded Camp Margaritaville RV Resort Crystal Beach was scheduled for 5pm. Dusk was closing in quicker due to the rain.

The “new” park is an updated rebranding of an existing RV resort and the result of an agreement between Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville hospitality company and a pair of local, southeast Texas developers. It’s the fourth of the Buffett brand’s Camp Margaritavilles, with sites in Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida. But this property is the first to be located right on the Gulf of Mexico and the first in the state of Texas.

The park originally opened in early 2022 as the Bolivar Beach Club & RV Resort, with a press kit featuring architectural renderings of sparkly new facilities bathed in gleaming whites and cerulean blues. The color schemes of both the original beach club digs and the new partnering Margaritaville brand are certainly complementary. But would this remix turn an understated, yet upscale beachside beauty into a cutesy, corporate Jimmy Buffett theme park?

With my destination just a bit farther up TX-87, visions of a Parrothead White Lotus began dancing in my head.

The Bolivar Beach Club & RV Resort soft-opened in early 2022, just in time to welcome the Mardi Gras and Spring Break seasons. The upper Texas Coast takes both of those parties quite seriously. The resort was partially the brainchild of Brad Ballard, president of NewCoast Properties, a local firm with stakes on the peninsula in two subdivisions: Laguna Harbor and Seagrass Beach.

According to the Houston Chronicle: The idea for Bolivar Beach Club “took shape when COVID-19 first hit, during routine backyard hangouts over White Claws between [Ballard] and his new neighbor, Minh Tran. The two became close friends and eventually business partners.”

And NewCoast’s holdings, including this new beachside RV resort, would join a number of other recent developments as markers of recovery, change, and expansion along Bolivar Peninsula. The area has been recovering since 2008, when a horrible wave of utter devastation clear-cut entire segments and towns.

Once inside Camp Margaritaville, the first impression is of elbow-room and openness. The rows of RV pads are generous and well-spaced. On this night, a low-key party buzz charged the air. Folks staying at the park, as well as guests coming just for the festivities, made their way in. One group started the party early, cackling and hooting around a fire pit across from the future home of Fins Bar & Grill, near the main entrance at Paradise Park.

My fears of a corny, over-branded Buffet-landia began to subside. The main change from those original architectural renderings was new branding and signage, the design of which struck a chord of not-too-tacky, but not-too-tasteful, either. After all, this is a vacation mecca aimed at Buffett-binging Parrotheads. They want a little cheese with that burger.

As I got out of my car, I experienced another sigh of relief. The first song to come blaring over the sound system at Camp Margaritaville Crystal Beach was not “Margaritaville.”

Paradise Park opens to an arcade, pool complex, VIP box seats (for big shows), a ½ scale football field, and music venue. Dipping temperatures tried to dampen the mood, but the heated party tent offered relief, lots to nosh, and a view of who shows up to these things.

As I looked around at this fits-like-a-glove partnership, the questions occurred to me more than a few times: Did a couple of neigh-bros really dream this up and make it so? Or was it spawned as a development scheme to attract offers from bigger players? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. The resort, as designed, feels like a pretty thorough and fairly unique dream come true. Maybe these new pals simply created the sort of place they’d like to visit? And maybe the timing of COVID just amped up the urgency, making the camping angle even more appealing?

Over in Margaritaville-ville, as COVID realities began to gut crucial numbers like heads-in-beds and Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) revenue, much of the lodging industry looked toward pivots. The pandemic incited a roadtrip-RV-camping boom – or at least mini-boom – across the nation, as state-by-state COVID inconsistencies made “outside” feel like a safer bet for overnight travel in the U.S.

Camp Margaritaville locations began to manifest during this time. According to Business Insider: “For now, Margaritaville won’t be building any RV camps from the ground up. Instead, to expedite the expansion of its RV resorts arm, the company will rebrand existing RV resorts to fit the Margaritaville ‘lifestyle.’ This means updating existing RV resorts with stronger programmatic, food, and beverage offerings, for example.”

Margaritaville’s first foray into the Texas camping scene certainly fits right into this nutshell.

Even before its recovery reality, Bolivar Peninsula always felt like a remote, yet not isolated, getaway – neither too far away, nor too overpopulated, especially relative to nearby travel markets. A pop over to Galveston for shopping or museum hopping is one breezy ferry ride away. And the easy reach from Houston gives folks from Texas’ largest metro area one more fabulous coastal gem for planned or spontaneous escape.

The public is invited for a $10 cover, which includes complimentary champagne toast and party favors.

The new year will not only see the eagerly anticipated opening of Fins Bar & Grill, but also, says Ballard, “We hope to deliver beach cottages or additional lodging options with full access to the amenities of the RV resort.”

All collaborations are tests of will, fortitude, and good chemistry. Time will tell if the White Clawed dreams of a couple of coastal Texas colleagues will mix nicely with a multi-million dollar margarita empire. The essential ingredient in our book will be great hospitality. If they get the recipe right, you know what they say:
