SUMMARY:Clotilda: The Exhibition at Africatown Heritage House
DESCRIPTION:Under the cover of night in the summer of 1860\, a ship carrying 110 Africans slipped into Mobile Bay. The Clotilda\, the last known US slave ship\, made its illegal voyage 52 years after the international slave trade was outlawed. In the years to come\, the displaced Africans survived enslavement and established a community as free Americans. But they also maintained their African identities\, creating the tight-knit\, independent community known as Africatown. Then\, in 2019\, it was announced that the shipwreck of the Clotilda had been discovered at the bottom of the Mobile River: a tangible link to the names and stories passed down through generations of descendants. \nIn March 2020\, the History Museum of Mobile announced a partnership with the Alabama Historical Commission\, Mobile County Commission\, and the City of Mobile. This partnership would create a landmark exhibition at the Africatown Heritage House\, located in the heart of historic Africatown. \nClotilda: The Exhibition covers the story of the Clotilda with a special focus on the people of the story – their individuality\, their perseverance\, and the extraordinary community they established. The exhibition tells the story of the 110 remarkable men\, women and children\, from their West African beginnings\, to their enslavement\, to their settlement of Africatown\, and finally the discovery of the sunken schooner\, all through a combination of interpretive text panels\, documents\, and artifacts. The pieces of the Clotilda that have been recovered from the site of the wreck are on display in the exhibition\, on loan from the Alabama Historical Commission. The exhibition was curated\, developed\, and designed in conjunction with the local community and the wider descendent community\, and in consultation with experts around the country. \n  \nRead More at Clotilda.com

SUMMARY:Chapel on the Dunes Tour
DESCRIPTION:High on a sand dune overlooking the Gulf of Mexico in Port Aransas\, there is a little white chapel\, the oldest functional consecrated church on the Island. The Port Aransas Museum offers free guided tours of the chapel. \nKnown locally as the Chapel on the Dunes\, it was built between 1937 and 1938 by Aline B. Carter. She was called the “White Angel” due to her flowing\, white organdy dresses and loving service to the community. Aline commissioned her friend and noted San Antonio artisan Ethel Wilson Harris\, of Mission San Jose Pottery and Arts & Crafts Division of the WPA\, to construct the chapel. The altar and tile work were based on drawings designed by Aline. \nAline referred to her chapel as the Chapel of Eternal Light due her love of the morning light from the gulf and the sunset light from the bay shining through the small windows. \nTours are scheduled every first and third Saturday of each month. Additional times may also be available on request for a modest donation. Please call the Port Aransas Museum to make reservations. \nRead More at Chapel on the Dunes

SUMMARY:Monroe Co. Sheriff: Children’s Animal Farm
DESCRIPTION:The farm was started in 1994 in an open area underneath the jail facility. The Stock Island Detention Center was built to withstand a Category Five Hurricane\, and is built on stilts\, about 11 feet above the ground. Underneath the building is employee parking\, and a secure fenced area used for the evacuation of inmates in the case of a fire. It was in this evacuation area\, initially a graveled area not used for anything else\, that the farm was started. \nThe farm began as a haven for homeless animals. The first inhabitants were Muscovy ducks and a group of chickens which were plaguing a nearby golf course and were being killed on a regular basis by vehicles. A short time after the chickens and ducks were brought to the area\, the SPCA in Miami called and asked if the facility would have space for a blind horse they had found abandoned in their area. Using inmate labor\, a pen was created for the horse\, who was christened Angel\, and the animal farm was born. Since\, it has blossomed into a beautiful park\, complete with an large aviary\, reptile exhibit\, rabbit warren\, farm animals\, and other domestic and exotic animal species. \nThe Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm features all sorts of animals\, both the traditional farm animals like miniature horses\, chickens\, pigs\, goats\, and rabbits as well as exotic animals kinkajou\, lemurs\, capybara\, coatimundi\, alpaca\, skunks\, foxes\, armadillos\, an albino Burmese python\, peacocks\, and tropical birds. A crew of inmates care for the animals to benefit from the experience. They receive formal training in aspects of animal husbandry which they may be able to use once they are released from the facility. They learn to work closely with creatures in need of the compassion and caring of a human being. \n  \nRead More at M.S.C.O.
